6 Reasons To Be Self Employed

As a van owner it's highly likely that you run your own business and are therefore self employed. You're already enjoying the benefits outlined below and the many more that haven't been included. For anyone that hasn't quite decided to bite the bullet, hand your notice in and start to work for yourself, here are some reasons that might give you that extra push:

Whether you've got the best boss in the world, or the manager from hell, nothing beats the feeling of being in charge. You get to control what work to do and how it's going to be done. Unsurprisingly, being able to call the shots is often cited as the best thing about being self employed with 87% of people saying that they have more freedom to do things they want at work.

You're the boss, so it doesn't matter if you don't get up until 12 and only work until 2 - at the end of the day, the amount of work you put in is the level of success you'll achieve. In the beginning you can expect to be working harder than those in the 9-5 grind, but eventually things will take off and you'll be able to relax a bit more. Being self employed is particularly useful when you have a young family and you need to work around the school run. You can set a schedule that allows you to work at times that best fit your needs.

The people that you work with and for can make or break any job. Most of the time when you work for yourself you don't have to worry about this because you rarely have work colleagues. If you are lucky enough to employ people, you only have yourself to blame if you don't like them because you're in charge of recruitment. In terms of customers, you can decide who to do jobs for and if they're a difficult client, you don't have to go back if you don't want to.

On average, freelancers, contracters and other self employed people earn 45% more than those who are traditionally employed. When you work for a company, someone else determines how much you earn and you often have to ask for a salary increase when you feel you deserve one. The amount of money you take home as a business owner is directly related to your productivity, so even though you're the boss calling the shots and you can work flexible hours, your pay packet is reliant on a successful business that is making profit which is down to you.

Being entitled to tax advantages comes at the cost of having to maintain accurate records of your spending during the tax year and submitting your own tax return. However, if you're organised or employ an accountant you can write off a variety of expenses including mileage, mobile phone bill, meals and travel related to business. There are now a number of apps and services to help self employed people out with their taxes.

Variety is the spice of life, so they say, and you can be sure that working for yourself means that you'll be wearing a lot of different hats. While this can sometimes be frustrating that you have to do everything yourself, it also keeps you on your toes and away from the banality of some jobs.

Taking on all these different roles also forces you to develop your skillset in a way that you would never be able to do working for someone else. You're forced to think, be creative and continually learn to update and adapt your skills.
